What is Gamithromycin?

Jun. 06, 2022

Zactran ® (gametomycin) is an antibiotic that provides protection against all the bacteria that primarily cause BRD.

ZACTRAN treats BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus pyogenes and Mycoplasma bovis in beef and non-lactating cows.

ZACTRAN controls respiratory disease in beef and non-lactating cows at high risk of BRD associated with M. haemolytica and P. multocida.

Features and Benefits of ZACTRAN

Keep more of your hard-earned profits with ZACTRAN

ZACTRAN controls and treats BRD, so cows can eat quickly and maintain weight gain.

▪ Reach the site of infection in as little as 30 minutes3**

After you apply ZACTRAN, the broad-spectrum antibiotic quickly reaches the site of infection - the lung epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of the lungs - where it kills bacteria and stops them from replicating.

With ZACTRAN, you will usually see improvement within 24 hours*.

Cattle treated with ZACTRAN in one study had lower body temperatures, were more alert and breathed better within 24 hours.1

The convenience of 10 days of treatment in one injection2

ZACTRAN continues to work for 10 days, reducing the time and labor associated with rebounding. With fewer animals to handle, cattle experience less stress and frustration, so they can devote more energy to gaining weight.

▪ Treating cattle with a cost effective dose

ZACTRAN is competitively priced, with a large single dose effect, providing 10 days of BRD treatment or control.

What is Gamithromycin?

Gamithromycin is the active pharmaceutical ingredient of ZACTRAN, a novel 7a-azanolactone that has been developed for the treatment and prevention of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). It is a 15-membered semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic of the aza-lactone subclass with a unique alkylated nitrogen at the 7a position of the lactone ring. Macrolide antibiotics are usually bacteriostatic by inhibiting bacterial RNA-dependent protein biosynthesis, but can also be bactericidal.

They reversibly bind to the 23S ribosomal RNA in the 50S subunit of the prokaryotic ribosome and prevent protein elongation during translocation. In vitro data suggest that gammillomycin is bactericidal and bacteriostatic, at least at the higher concentrations found in lung tissue. The broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of gametomycin includes Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Haemophilus pyogenes, which are the bacterial pathogens most commonly associated with BRD. Subcutaneous administration of gamma-erythromycin is well absorbed and fully bioavailable and is safe for target animals receiving up to 5 times the recommended dose at 30 mg/kg body weight.

After subcutaneous administration, gamma-erythromycin is widely and rapidly distributed to the lung tissue, the site of respiratory tract infection. It is also safe for target animals to receive up to five times the recommended dose at 30 mg/kg bw.
